Mayra Flores is a Mexican personality and American citizen who is a politician by profession and formerly a graduate student health practitioner from the state of Texas. Mayra Flores is a personality born in 1985/86 who spent her childhood in Burgos, Tamaulipas. Her parents were farm workers at the time. Her family had to move to different places in Texas during her childhood, from where she finished high school while working in the cotton field with her parents in Memphis. Before joining Congress, Mayra worked for the Hidalgo County Republican Party as the chairman of Hispanic Outreach. Mayra announced her candidacy for Texas’s 34th congressional district after announcing the retirement of Filemon Vela Jr. in March 2021. She campaigned and sought help from Hispanic and Latino Americans to support her and show their concern to the Democratic Party, which they have historically shown to the South Texas region. On the other hand, after the creation of a new congressional district, incumbent Democrat Vicente Gonzalez of the 15th district announced his candidacy for the position of 34th district representative. Later, on March 1, both Flares and Gonzalez won their primaries and would face each other in the general election on November 8, 2022. In March 2022, Vela announced his resignation from a stable position in Congress to join Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. Shortly after Vela’s resignation, Flores stated that she intended to run for election to fill the vacancy. Elections for the position were later set for June 14, 2022. After the election, Flores defeated her opposition Dan Sanchez and won her election. After winning the election, Flares became the first Republican and the first woman to be elected from the lower Rio Grande Valley.
