Venus Lacy was born on February 9, 1967 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She attended Brainerd High School in her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she won the state championship in 1984 at age 17. Lacy attended Louisiana Tech University, where she led her team to the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship in 1988. The following year, she made her appearance in the 1989 Final Four, but lost the game to Auburn. In 1990, during her final years, she let her team go undefeated all season and took the number 1 position in the national polls. The same year, Lacy was named a consensus all-American and the WBCA Player of the Year. The same 1990 team made another appearance for the Final Four, where they upset Auburn’s opposition team. Venus completed her NCAA career with 266 points scored in the entire tournament, which later gave her the honor of being ranked among the top 10 female players of the time. In 2011, Lacy was honored to appear in the Louisiana Tech University Athletic Hall of Fame.

During the early years of her career, she learned that the US team did not have a professional league for women. This was the reason she had to play for different teams belonging to Greece, Italy and Japan. But she tried her best to stick to her common rules and helped her Greek team to enter the European Championships during the specific season from 1995 to 1996. On June 19, 1996, during the ABL Draft, Lacy was the first person those selected by the Seattle Reign. But at first it seemed that her luck was working in the opposite direction and she wanted her to leave the game. In 1997, Lacy was seriously injured in a car accident, forcing her to finish her 1997 season in Seattle on the injured list. The following year after the injury in 1997, Lacy was selected by the Long Beach Stingrays, the extension of the ABL. The expansion team performed quite poorly in the early years. The team appeared for the ABL Finals, losing the Columbus Quest game but winning the first two games, later playing in Long Beach due to scheduling conflicts in Columbus, and eventually the Long Beach Stingrays went on to lose the Columbus game. After a year, the Long Beach franchise shut down, though it couldn’t resist its success on the track.

During this time, Lacy was drafted by another ABL expansion team called Nashville Noise. During the 1998-99 season, the team played only 15 games. Due to her injuries from a car accident, Lacy had to do without a draft from the WNBA. Venus had the chance to play at least 17 games during the year and two more in the following 2000 season.
