DiDi Richards, aka Deauzya Richards, is the force to be reckoned with both on offense and on defense. On February 8, 1999, DiDi Richards was born in Houston, Texas, in the US. Her mother’s name is Ungeanetta Richards, and her father’s name is Damian Richards. Damian is also her sibling’s name. She is both a US citizen and of African American descent. DiDi completed her high school education at Cypress Ranch High School. Throughout her school, she was a standout athlete. She played in 33 games as a freshman and had an overall scoring average of 5.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. DiDi led the Lady Bears in thefts (six), blocks (three) and assists (one) at the end of the season. She finished third among the Big 12 rookies in blocks and rebounds and impressed throughout the conference. In her second year, DiDi experienced a breakthrough season. She started in all 38 of her games and assisted the Lady Bears in their title game victory over Notre Dame. During the season, she was selected to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team and was named Defensive Player of the Year. DiDi’s reputation as one of the best defenders in the country was cemented when she won the National Defensive Player of the Year Awards from both Naismith and the WBCA. Her 171 assists in the truncated COVID-19 season still ranks sixth among the all-time Baylor juniors despite the season being cut short. With an average team performance of 29.9 minutes per game, she competed in and started all 30 games for Baylor.
WNBA
DiDis’ last Baylor season before starting her WNBA career was one of tenacity. DiDi collided with a teammate during a preseason exercise and the collision temporarily immobilized him. She pushed herself back and returned to the floor just 38 days after the event, despite being advised to consider life outside of basketball. She led the Lady Bears to the Elite Eight averaging 6.3 points, 6.3 assists and just over 1 steal per game for the season. The New York Liberty selected “Welcome to NY” as the 17th overall pick in the 2021 WNBA drawing. Flourished in its rookie season, playing in 31 games and finishing first among rookies in three-point field goal %, games played, assists and minutes played. She was recognized for her outstanding year by being named to the Associated Press’s All-Rookie Team.
